Volunteer Induction
It is essential to put in place a good volunteer induction programme. Although it should not be too formal, it needs to be structured and well thought out. It may need to be flexible as well in order to take into account varying volunteer needs. If there are any insurance cover restrictions, then the induction is the time to communicate such information to the volunteer(s).
Some Practice Guidelines
- Ensure that volunteers are not placed in situations which may endanger their own or another’s physical or mental well-being
- Provide adequate training, management and supervision, which includes giving clear guidance to volunteers on how to report accidents or loss or damage to property
- Clearly define volunteer tasks and responsibilities and communicate these to volunteers and paid staff
- If necessary to the task, provide safe and tested equipment and protective clothing
- Treat volunteers with equal consideration when it comes to health and safety policy
Purpose of Volunteering Induction
Typically, an induction should:-
- Introduce volunteers to the organisation, its aims and activities and a brief history if relevant.
- Give an overview of organisation structure including introducing the volunteer(s) to other staff members and volunteers.
- Go through Health and Safety issues and fire points, exists and procedures. Recommend a fire drill exercise shortly after volunteer intake.
- Agree plans for training, supervision and personal development.
- Provide opportunity to tour the building(s) or area of work.
-Run through policies such as expenses, volunteer policy, confidentiality, disciplinary and grievance procedures.
